What is the difference between Magento 1 and Magento 2?
Magento 1 is the old version of Magento (as the name implies) and has been in existence since 2010. During the period since it's release it has undergone major changes and updates and is still one of the most popular e-commerce platforms on the internet. However with the release of Magento 2, the original Magento is now reaching the end of it's shelf-life meaning that Magento themselves will no longer continue to support it in the coming years.
Both of these platforms are powerful and have their own community-driven extensions and integrations that make them perfect for just about any online-store scenario. Both are quite code-heavy and require a good server to keep them fast and stable.
Because the code bases are so different between 1 & 2, it means that Magento 1 developers will not necessarily be able to handle a Magento 2 integration or upgrade . There's a steep learning curve required for all developers between the two systems and it's important that you choose the right development company to work on your Magento website.
Magento 2 uses the 'composer' framework to update and maintain it's dependent extensions, with composer it is far easier to update, adapt and change the entire system. Magento 1 does not use this, and so we are reliant on the main code-base to be updated for any new features or to install third-party plugins to handle this for us.
Magento 2 will continue to be updated and maintained for the forseeable future.
